The right dog door size comes from your dog’s shoulder height and chest width, measured standing, not from its breed.
We fit small, medium, large and extra large dog doors into glass, timber, screen and French doors. A door that is too small makes your dog stoop and squeeze, and one that is far too big takes more out of the door than it needs to. This page explains how to measure, what each size suits, and how size changes the installation.

Breed is only a starting point. About 1 in 4 dogs we are asked about is a cavoodle, and more than a third of all dog enquiries are oodles of one kind or another, and sizes within one oodle name vary widely. Small dogs
For small breeds such as the Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Toy Poodle, Miniature Dachshund, Australian Terrier and Jack Russell Terrier.
Medium dogs
For medium breeds such as the Cocker Spaniel, Beagle, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Kelpie and Australian Cattle Dog.
Large and extra large dogs
Large doors suit breeds such as the Labrador, Golden Retriever, Boxer, Weimaraner and Greyhound. Extra large suits many German Shepherds and Rottweilers, and dogs that are tall or broad for their breed. A big dog pushes real weight through the door, so in glass we generally fit these into a new toughened panel made with the opening already cut. More on our large and extra large dog doors page.

For small and medium dogs, a door can usually be cut into existing laminated glass on site. For large and extra large dogs we generally recommend a new toughened panel made with the opening already cut, because a bigger dog puts more weight through the glass and a bigger opening takes more glass out of the panel. Our pet doors use a slimline frame that passes between the panels of a sliding door, and we check the gap between the panels before we start.
On a French door the width of the pane is often the limit, not your dog. If the widest pane cannot take the opening, the door goes into the frame or a side panel instead.

Measure your dog standing: floor to the top of the shoulders, and across the widest part of the chest. The opening needs to clear both. Send these with your quote request and we recommend the door.
It depends on the dog. Cavoodles range from toy to standard size, so two cavoodles can need different doors. Measure shoulder height and chest width rather than going by the name.
Allow for the size your dog will grow to, not the size it is today, so you are not replacing the door in a year.
