Can You Put a Dog Door in Double Glazed Glass? -

Yes. A dog door can go into a double glazed door, and it is a job we do. Double glazing needs more planning than a single pane, so here is what is different and what we check first.

What makes double glazing different

A double glazed panel is two panes of glass with a gap between them, sealed together as one unit. A pet door has to pass through both panes and keep that unit sealed, so the opening is planned around the whole unit rather than a single sheet of glass.

Pet doors are made for this. Pet-Tek, one of the brands we fit, makes dog doors designed for double glazed glass.

What we check before we fit one

  • The glass in the unit. Like any glass door, the type of glass matters. Toughened glass cannot be cut once it has been toughened, while laminated glass usually can. Our guide can my glass door be cut for a dog door? explains how to tell which you have.
  • Which panel. On sliding and stacker doors we look for a panel that stays put, so the door keeps working exactly as it did.
  • Your dog. The size of the opening comes from your dog’s shoulder height and chest width, and the largest dog if you have more than one.

Cut on site, or a new unit?

It follows the same rule as any glass door. Where the glass in the unit can be cut, we cut the opening on site. Where it is toughened, it cannot be cut, so the unit is remade with the opening already in it and we fit the new unit. Either way the pet door passes through both panes and the unit stays sealed.

Send us a photo and the details of your door and we tell you the right way to do it before any work starts.

When another spot is better

Sometimes the double glazed door is not the best place for the pet door. A nearby timber door, a security screen or a wall can be simpler. We will tell you if that is the case for your home.
